Interpretations and evaluations of risk-relevant information

The aim of the project is to investigate how the issue of chemical risks of consumer goods is constructed, how chemical information is translated (and subsequently if a misrepresentation of the risk matters) and how the public is presented as part of the solution to the problem. The industries investigated are paint, toys and textile. These cases are closely related to current issues of health, environment and ethics.

Chemical information is provided, for example, by product labelling, databases, lists, environmental declarations, instructions and education. The providers are, not only firms, but also education facilities, NGOs and the media to mention a few. The compelxity of both the information provision and the understanding of that information poses challenges and problems. This project aims to highlight questions of the type; What aspects are seen as relevant when a risk issue is constructed? What perspectives of risk are focused on? Can we see contradictions? Who owns the question? How do we view individuals in risk managment?
